How to Use Your Insurance

You're enrolled. Your card came in the mail. Now what?

Your first visit, step by step

  • Pick a primary care provider from your plan's in-network directory.
  • Call to schedule. Mention your insurance up front.
  • Book your "annual wellness visit" first — it's free under preventive care, even before your deductible.
  • Bring your insurance card and a photo ID.
  • If you owe a copay, you'll pay at check-in.

Filing a claim (usually you don't)

If you stayed in-network, the provider files the claim for you. You don't do anything. If you went out-of-network or used an out-of-area provider, you may have to file the claim yourself — your insurer's website has the form. Keep the itemized receipt.

How to stay in-network without thinking about it

Before you book, call the specialist's office and ask if they take your specific plan (not just your insurer — the exact plan name on your card). If not, ask your PCP for an in-network alternative. Two minutes saves thousands.

Federal law (the No Surprises Act) protects you from balance billing for emergency care, even if the ER is out-of-network. You still owe your in-network cost-sharing, but you can't be billed the difference. Keep all paperwork in case you have to dispute.
